[wanabidii] Zupco in second accident within hours, 20 people feared dead, Masvingo rd gets deadlier

Saturday, February 08, 2014

TWENTY people are feared dead after a Zupco bus was involved in a road traffic accident at Furtherstone, along Harare-Masvingo road.

What's shocking is that yesterday a Pioneer transport bus was burnt to ashes along the very same road. However, it's now a cause for concern since this is Zupco's SECOND fatal accident in a single day.

Earlier in the day, another Zupco bus had killed four people when the bus was swept away while trying to cross Musavezi River in Shurugwi early Friday morning. Several other people were injured and the bus was carrying 29 passengers and the bus crew. two more people were missing, rasising fears that their bodies could have been swept away by the river.

A couple of hours later, another Zupco bus was involved in horrific accident when an abnormal-load haulage truck reportedly ripped through a government-owned bus.

Several people died on the spot and bodies of dead people were scattered all over the accident scene. The actual number of people who perished in the accident had not been verified by the time of publishing but sources who witnessed the accident said around twenty people could have died. One of the people who lost their lives in the accident was a school child.

Several dead bodies were trapped in the bus with some corpses hanging through the shattered windows.

Meanwhile, members of the public continue to call for the government's intervention to save human life along the deadly Harare-Masvingo-Beitbridge highway.

Hundreds of people perish along the killer-highway but the government has not widened the road.

"Furtherstone is dangerous. I lost someone there too. Government should widen that road soon," said Tatenda Murehwa Mudarikwa who also lost his beloved one in the horrific accident.

Others urged the government, especially the Ministry of Transport and the Police to be strict on Zupco buses just as much as they do on all other public transport vehicles.

"What's so special about Zupco buses that they pass through every road block in Zimbabwe when all other buses are stopped? Now look they are killing people as if they are slaughtering chickens," said another disgruntled citizen who commented on My Zimbabwe Facebook page.
