On September 2, U.S. and Brazilian officials participated in the first meeting of the U.S.-Brazil Global Human Rights Working Group in Brasilia, Brazil. This dialogue is an opportunity for the two nations to discuss a wide range of important global human rights issues.

Discussions focused on areas for cooperation during the upcoming 30th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council and the upcoming 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly Third Committee.

Attending on behalf of the United States were Liliana Ayalde, U.S. Ambassador to Brazil; Ambassador Keith Harper, U.S. Representative to the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva; and, Deputy Assistant Secretary Scott Busby of the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor.

This working group was established as a result of President Obama and Brazilian President Rousseff’s meetings in June of this year, where both nations pledged to enhance collaboration on human rights issues in multilateral fora.
