The Governments of the United States and Germany will hold a Cyber Bilateral Meeting in Berlin, Germany on June 26, 2014. This second bilateral engagement follows discussions held on June 14, 2013 in Washington, D.C. that reinforced our alliance by highlighting our collaboration on key cyber issues over the course of the last decade. Prior discussions also embodied a “whole-of-government” approach, furthering U.S. and German cooperation on a wide range of cyber issues and our collaborative engagement on operational and strategic objectives. Officials from relevant ministries and agencies of the two governments will discuss bilateral cooperation on cyber issues, including cybersecurity and critical infrastructure protection, cyber defense, combating cybercrime, Internet Freedom, and Internet governance. Mr. Christopher Painter, Coordinator for Cyber Issues, U.S. Department of State, will lead the U.S. Government interagency delegation, including representatives from the Department of State, including Ambassador Daniel Sepulveda, Coordinator for Communication and Information Policy and Scott Busby, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor, as well as the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Commerce, the Department of Justice, the National Security Council, the Office of Science and Technology Policy, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the Department of Defense. The bilateral meeting will be followed by an open, multistakeholder Cyber Dialogue hosted by German Foreign Minister Steinmeier. Mr. John Podesta, Counselor to President Obama, will provide keynote remarks, and a high level panel of both German and U.S. experts will discuss big data, privacy, security, economic innovation, and international cyber cooperation. U.S. speakers will include Cameron Kerry of the Brookings Institution (and former Counsel, Department of Commerce); Julie Brill, Commissioner, Federal Trade Commission; and James Lewis, Center for Strategic and International Studies. Participants from government, industry, civil society and academia will have the chance to discuss these issues and ideas for potential solutions further in smaller breakout sessions.
