The U.S. Department of State will host the fourth Annual 6k Walk for Water at 11:45 a.m., on Wednesday, April 23, as part of the Department’s Earth Day celebrations. Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs Judy Garber will kick off the event by delivering remarks outside the Department’s 21st Street entrance near the corner of Virginia Avenue, NW. The Embassy of Sweden will host a water stop at the halfway point. Experts from The Nature Conservancy, WASH Advocates, and World Wildlife Fund will be stationed in front of the Embassy of Sweden with displays about water issues. The event is open to the public. Interested participants can register for the walk at http://www.state.gov/m/pri/gdi/releases/c62554.htm. The Annual 6K Walk for Water is organized to acknowledge the millions of people in the developing world, most often women and girls, who walk an average of six kilometers per day to collect water for their families. The task of collecting water keeps children out of school and prevents women from engaging in other, more productive economic activities. The event also recognizes that growing water scarcity has widespread implications for global health, food security, economic prosperity, and eco-systems. Media are invited to attend the event, which will begin at 11:45 a.m. For further information, please contact EarthDay@state.gov. |
