The text of the following statement was released by the Governments of the United States and Poland on the occasion of the Annual Bilateral Strategic Dialogue and Strategic Cooperation Consultative Group.

Begin Text:

On March 18, the U.S. Department of State hosted Under Secretary of State for Security Policy of the Republic of Poland Boguslaw Winid and a delegation of Polish officials for the annual bilateral Strategic Dialogue, a forum for consultation and cooperation on a wide range of global and regional issues that reflect the depth of the relationship between our two countries.

In light of Russia's violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, we discussed the actions of the United States and our European allies to impose costs on Russia, even as we continue to make clear our openness to a diplomatic pathway to de-escalation. Vice President Joe Biden was in Poland on Tuesday to consult with President Komorowski and Prime Minister Tusk on steps to support Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and affirm our collective defense commitments under the North Atlantic Treaty and our enduring support for all of our allies and partners in Europe.

As North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Allies, we discussed our security partnership—which has reached an unprecedented level in our history together—ranging from Afghanistan to Kosovo to our Aviation Detachment at Lask air base. The United States commended the $45 billion dollar defense modernization investments Poland is making. The United States and U.S. industry stand ready to deepen even further our relationship with Poland in support of Poland’s defense modernization goals. We confirmed that plans are on track to deploy a missile defense site in Poland in the 2018 timeframe as part of the European Phased Adaptive Approach to NATO missile defense.

We are enormously proud of the work we do together to safeguard transatlantic values, advance transatlantic security and prosperity, and promote the rule of law in Europe and around the world. Poland is thriving and so is our alliance. We look forward to continued consultations within the framework of the Strategic Dialogue.

On March 19, Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security Rose Gottemoeller and Under Secretary Winid co-chaired the Strategic Cooperation Consultative Group (SCCG). Established in 2008, this was the fourth meeting of the group during the Obama Administration. The SCCG discussion centered around our bilateral security relationship, with specific focus on arms control and nonproliferation policy, missile defense cooperation, and defense industrial modernization.
