COURT HEARS HOW HUSBAND CUT WIFE'S VAGINA WITH A RAZOR BLADE TO MAKE HER UNATTRACTIVE TO OTHER MEN

A 27-YEAR-OLD woman of Chipata's Mkanda area on Wednesday told the Chipata Magistrates' Court how her husband cut off part of her genitalia with a razor blade to make her unattractive to other men.

Testifying in a case where Azele Phiri is charged with causing grievous bodily harm, Agness Phiri of Kachikumba village in chieftainess Mkanda's area said she fainted when her husband cut off part of her labia.

Agness said she also fainted when Phiri later added salt to the wound.

She said on June 4, 2014, Phiri returned home around 22:00 hours and demanded nshima.

Agness said Phiri told her to serve him nshima at his young brother's house, which she did.

She said Phiri ordered her to wait for the plates he was eating from.

She said she got the plates and went to sleep while Phiri remained outside.

"When he came into the house, he demanded nshima again and I asked him whether he wasn't satisfied. I told him that we had some leftover foods at lunch. He also asked for meat, which we had left for a child, and I told him it was at the window. As I tried to get meat from the window, my husband pushed me and pressed me to the ground. He sat on my tummy and used fibre to tie my hands together before stuffing my mouth with a piece of cloth," she said narrated.

Agness said that pinning her against the ground head up, Phiri forced her legs apart.

"As I was like that, my husband spread my legs and started cutting my labia. I became unconscious and when I came to, I found a bucket of water and there was a lot of blood where I was. At that point I asked my husband about what had happened because if I had done anything wrong, he would have taken me to my parents. But he told me that he chopped part of my vagina so that no one should be admiring me and that I should remain his wife until death do us apart," she said.

Agness said she asked him whether he had found her committing adultery or doing any other wrong for him to treat her in such a manner.

"After a while, he took me to the bedroom, because all this was happening at the sitting room and while in the bedroom, he added salt to the injury, and I fainted again. After I fainted he ran away because he knew that he had committed a serious offence," she said.

Agness said later, Phiri's young brother's wife visited her to check on her and discovered that the labia were completely cut.

She said her sister in marriage informed her brothers in-law who came to her home the following day.

Agness said she was unable to go to the hospital because it was far from where they were staying and that she was not able to walk.

"My husband bought methylated spirit and started treating me at home. I remember at some point before my wound could heal, my husband wanted to have sex with me but I refused. On 13th July when I felt much better I went to my parents' village, which is Kachikumba, and two days later, my husband followed me. He didn't find me at the village but my relatives told him to return later with his relatives. Whilst at my village he found me at the well. He insulted me, calling me a prostitute," she said.

Agness said her relatives reported the matter to chieftainess Mkanda who gave her a letter that she took to Mugubudu police post where she was again given another letter to Chipata General Hospital.

She said she was treated and given a medical report at the hospital.

Agness said it was then that police arrested her husband.

"Neo ndine okalipa chifukwa chakuti nalemala, ndipo paliye mwanalume muyakine anganikwatile (I am bitter because I have became lame and there isn't any other man who can marry me)," said Agness.

Phiri constantly broke down as his wife was testifying.

After noticing that Phiri was crying, principal resident magistrate Twambo Musonda asked him whether he was okay or the case should be stood down briefly so that he could sober up, but he told her that the matter should continue.

In cross-examination, Phiri asked Agness whether it was true that he assaulted her with a razor blade to which she answered in the affirmative.

He later asked her whether he was telling the truth in line with what was contained in John 4: 20.

The court denied Phiri bail, fearing that he might interfere with witnesses.

The matter was adjourned to August 12 for continuation of trial.
