[wanabidii] Justice the Canadian Way

This guy has been fined $500 just for throwing coins, in anger, at a coffeehouse employee.

He wanted coffee that was $1.70 but he had only $1.59 ready. he expected the employee to forgive the remaining $0.11 because he's always given them tips anyway. Why not overlook this little amount?

Anyway, thee employee insisted on the $0.11 and the guy dug through his pockets and found more coins but instead of handing them over in a polite/civil manner, he threw them rudely at the employee and "hurt" the employee because the coins stroke the employee on the cheek.

Anyway, long story short; he was reported to the police, prosecuted and the judge ruled that he pays $500 fine to a children's charity. That is justice, the Canadian way. One gets a feeling that the police and the courts have no work to do at all so they dig at the bottom of the barrel to find anything to keep themselves busy.

Canada has very little crime and such cases are very common, especially in small towns.

Here is the story:

Tim Hortons coin thrower ordered to pay $500 to charity

CBCCBC – Mon, 21 Oct, 2013

A New Brunswick man who threw coins at a Tim Hortons employee after she told him he was short 11 cents to pay for his medium double-double has been fined $250 and ordered to pay $500 to a charity.

Roy Gilmore, 49, of Pennfield, was captured on surveillance video during the noon-hour incident last October at a Quispamsis doughnut shop, a Saint John provincial court heard in early September. Judge Andrew LeMesurier sentenced Gilmore last week, ordering him to give $500 to the Tim Hortons Children's Foundation, which offers camps for underprivileged children. He's also banned from any Tim Hortons locations in Saint John and its bedroom communities.

The court heard in September that Katelyn Blair took Gilmore's order, then told him the price — $1.70. But Gilmore could only produce $1.59.

Blair testified that Gilmore was "mean" and said: "For all the times I come in and have given you tips, you couldn't even give me a [expletive] coffee."

He took a step to leave, she said, but then threw the coins at her, striking her cheek, her shoulder and another server.

Blair, then 21 years old and a supervisor, reported the incident to the Rothesay Regional Police Force the following day.

At sentencing, Gilmore said he was sorry and does sometimes get angry. He said he has chronic pain from an accident.

LeMesurier said he'd give Gilmore a break and not send him to jail as the Crown requested. But he noted Gilmore had a lengthy record with 17 incidents, including assaulting a peace officer and assault with a weapon. The Tim Hortons assault also violated the conditions of a two-year probation order.
