The U.S. Department of State will host the D3 Innovation Summit on Monday, January 25, 2016, beginning at 9:00 a.m. The half-day event is an interagency initiative developed in partnership with the Department of State, Department of Defense, and the U.S. Agency for International Development to inspire whole-of-government, collaborative innovations to solve emerging global challenges. The summit will highlight revolutionary technologies developed by interagency teams across the Department of State, Department of Defense, and the U.S. Agency for International Development designed to strengthen our national security, enhance diplomacy, and improve the lives of people around the globe. Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken and White House Chief Technology Officer Megan Smith will give keynote addresses. A panel discussion on “Democratization of Technology and How Emerging Innovative Trends Will Impact Future Strategic Environments” will feature: Dr. Arati Prabhakar, Director, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency; Ann Mei Chang, Executive Director US Global Development Lab and Chief Innovation Officer, U.S. Agency for International Development; Dr. Vaughan Turekian, Science and Technology Advisor to the Secretary of State; and Walter Isaacson, President & CEO, Aspen Institute. The D3 Summit will also feature the D3 Pitch Challenge, an interagency call for submissions on how the United States may leverage new technologies to advance its defense, diplomacy, and development goals. Six finalist teams were selected from nearly 500 employee submissions across the Department of State, Department of Defense, and the U.S. Agency for International Development. Finalists will present their proposals before a senior government panel, featuring General Paul Selva, Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Eric Postel, Associate Administrator of U.S. Agency for International Development; and Catherine Novelli, Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment. The event will be live-streamed on video.state.gov/live. This event is open to the press. Pre-set time for cameras is 8:00 a.m. from the 23rd Street entrance. Final access time for writers and stills is 8:45 a.m. from the 23rd Street entrance. Media representatives may attend this event upon presentation of one of the following: (1) A U.S. Government-issued identification card (Department of State, White House, Congress, Department of Defense or Foreign Press Center), (2) a media-issued photo identification card, or (3) a letter from their employer on letterhead verifying their employment as a journalist, accompanied by an official photo identification card (driver's license, passport). NOTE: In the event of a delayed opening or government closure due to inclement weather, the D3 Summit will be postponed to a later date.
