On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I offer my warmest congratulations to the citizens of Montenegro as you celebrate your Statehood Day. Since Montenegro regained independence nine years ago, your country has made many positive contributions to the region and to the world. The United States values deeply its friendship with the government and people of Montenegro, and will continue to support Montenegro’s efforts to advance along its NATO and Euro-Atlantic path. My country will stand by you as you work together to further strengthen democratic institutions and the rule of law, promote economic development, respect human rights, and build an active and productive civil society.
