[wanabidii] Mining Firms Should Not Bulldoze Zambia – JCTR

Saturday, January 03, 2015

The Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection says mining firms should not be seen to bulldoze the Zambian government over mining taxes.

Barrick Gold, the owners of Lumwana Mine, have put the mine on care and maintenance following government having effected the new tax laws that has taken the mineral royalty tax from 3% to 20%.

JCTR Executive Director Father Leonard Chiti said that the government should show that they were in charge of the Zambian resources and not playing to the whims of miners.

Fr Chiti said that the investors should not be allowed to bully the government.

"I think government should not be seen to be dictated to be dictated to. What we have seen is that they are being threatened by the investors which makes very sad reading," he said.

"We want to see a situation where government tells them off that if they want bully the Zambian people then they can be told to go. Of there should be room for dialogue."
