Catherine Russell, Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues, will travel to Tokyo, Japan from September 10-14, 2014 to participate in the World Assembly for Women (WAW) Symposium. This symposium, jointly hosted by the Government of Japan, the Japan Business Federation, Nikkei, Inc., and the Japan Institute of International Affairs, will address common issues faced by women throughout the world as well as promote the active role of women in their societies. While in Tokyo, Ambassador Russell will meet with senior Japanese government officials and private sector leaders to discuss ways to increase women’s political and economic empowerment. At the WAW Symposium, she will participate in and report on the outcomes of the high-level roundtable discussion on Human Security and Women, which will focus on the role that women play in security issues and ways the international community can develop concrete measures to address the challenges faced by all countries to secure fundamental needs such as access to water, food, energy, and healthcare.

In addition, Ambassador Russell will deliver keynote remarks at a “Shine Week” side event focused on helping women develop their careers and creating societies where women can assume leadership roles and realize their full potential. For further information, please contact SGWI_PA@state.gov.
