Q2 Message from Charles Brewer
Managing Director,
DHL Express, Sub Saharan Africa

July 16, 2014

Dear valued customer,

Africa certainly has its fair share of challenges and not a week goes by when we don't have to deal with a unique and testing situation; but Africa continues to progress, continues to grow and continues to excite. This is truly, the last frontier!

As evidence of Africa's continued and exciting journey we have had a great first-half of 2014; seeing significant and accelerated shipment growth and more and more new customers trusting the world's most global company to manage their international supply chain.

Thank you for entrusting us with your valuable shipments and you have my continued commitment that we will always go the extra mile to exceed your expectations.

Let me take you through a short recap of what we have been doing to provide you with the very best service levels and industry-leading solutions:

Our People
  • So far this year we have put 3446 of our fantastic Sub Saharan Africa employees through DHL's proprietary and award winning Certified International Specialist program.
  • We have rolled out our Made in Africa management development program that seeks to cultivate local talent to take up senior roles in Africa and beyond.
  • We received over 2000 appreciation notes from customers to our employees during our our Employee Appreciation Week!
Our Service
  • We now deliver 90% of all inbound shipments by 12:00 noon, across Sub Saharan Africa. We introduced our electronic signature (ESIG) capability in 21 countries across Sub Saharan Africa. Receivers sign for shipments electronically, and the signature is visible online within minutes, giving you added assurance that the shipment was delivered and a signature to prove it.
  • We have also added another feature to our tracking system: Estimated Date of Delivery (EDD) and with EDD, you can better plan your logistics with added accuracy.
  • We added 200 new vehicles across Africa as we continue our focus on equipping our staff to deliver the best service for our customers.
  • Furthermore, we have opened new and upgraded signature facilities in Durban and Johannesburg, South Africa, with more planned in Uganda, Kenya, DRC and Nigeria.
  • We introduced our electronic signature (ESIG) capability in 21 countries across Sub Saharan Africa. Receivers sign for shipments electronically, and the signature is visible online within minutes, giving you added assurance that the shipment was delivered, and a signature to prove it.
Our Customers
  • Manufacturing on the continent, whilst growing, is still fairly embryonic and as such the economic thrust has to come from SMEs. It isn't ready just yet, but by the end of the year we should be rolling out a 'free of charge' SME training and development program all aimed at providing you with the necessary motivation and tools to get globally connected, expand and grow your business. Stay tuned for more information on this very exciting development.
  • To that point, we now have more than 3000 service points across Sub Saharan Africa, providing you with even more access to DHL and to the world.

Being insanely customer centric remains our key driving force and if there is anything that we are missing and / or not providing, please do feel free to let me know. Thank you for your loyalty and I look forward to seeing you soon!

Sincerely,

Charles Brewer,

MD – DHL Express, Sub Saharan Africa
