[wanabidii] Prof Julius Nyang'oro Afutiwa Mashtaka

Sunday, July 06, 2014
A former chairman of the Department of African and Afro-American studies at the Universityunc professor 2 of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has successfully gotten the charges dropped against him in exchange for his cooperation with investigators.

Julius Nyang'oro had been charged with fraud for accepting $12,000 for a class he allegedly never taught, but those charges were dropped after he gave authorities information that they consider essential to their investigation.

Nyang'oro resigned as chairman amid charges that his department was involved in fraud relating to Tar Heel football players. An NCAA investigation centered on no-show classes and altered grades in Nyang'oro's department.

"Julius Nyang'oro has cooperated with the SBI criminal investigation and has agreed to continue cooperating with the district attorney's office," Orange County District Attorney Jim Woodall said in a statement Thursday, according to WRAL. "Nyang'oro has also agreed to cooperate fully and completely with the independent (non-criminal) investigation being conducted by Kenneth Wainstein into athletic and academic issues at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill."
Woodall confirmed that Nyang'oro provided "invaluable information that they could have gotten from no other source"

"He has met with us on multiple occasions, he has answered all of our questions regarding the academic and athletic dimensions of the irregular courses offered in the Department of African and Afro-American Studies, and he has provided important insights and information we would otherwise not have received," Wainstein added. "In sum, his cooperation has contributed significantly to the progress that our investigation has made to date."
Woodall says this doesn't necessarily mean that Nyang'oro is off the hook because if other infractions are unearthed, investigators may act on them.
