DODOMA, Tanzania (Xinhua) -- Tanzania on Tuesday expressed its intention to send Swahili lecturers to Western African countries including Gabon in a bid to make the language acquire continental status.

Briefing the National Assembly in Tanzania's capital city of Dodoma, Deputy Minister for Education and Vocational Training Jenista Mhagama said the government was in final stages to accomplish the mission.

She said the language has been growing and the number of people who want to learn the language has been mounting in recent years.

The official said last year, President of Gabon Omar Bongo asked Tanzania to send lecturers to teach Swahili language at his country's universities.

"As ministry of Education and Vocational Training, we have worked on the request and very soon we'll send one lecturer as starting point before sending others for the same purpose," the minister said, adding that right now there are 474 foreign students who pursue Swahili language studies in Tanzania's universities.

Mhagama said there are many Swahili experts who are in African nations teaching the language, which is widely spoken in east and central Africa.

Citing some examples, the deputy minister said for many years Swahili have been taught in Libya, though in recent years Tanzania has stopped the mission due to volatile security situation in the oil-rich nation.
