Press Releases: Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights Sarah Sewall To Travel to Indonesia, Burma, and Nigeria 05/02/2014 02:47 PM EDT Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights Sarah Sewall To Travel to Indonesia, Burma, and Nigeria Media Note Office of the Spokesperson Washington, DC May 2, 2014 Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights Sarah Sewall will travel to Indonesia, Burma, and Nigeria from May 5-14, 2014. On May 5, Under Secretary Sewall will lead the U.S. delegation to the Open Government Partnership (OGP) 2014 Steering Committee Ministerial Meeting, hosted by the Government of Indonesia in Nusa Dua, Bali. During the Ministerial Meeting, OGP Steering Committee members will review progress since last year’s meeting in October, discuss a new four-year strategy, and consider recommendations for enhancing OGP’s effectiveness as a catalyst for transformational advances in transparency, accountability and citizen engagement in 64 participating countries around the world. Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Tom Malinowski will join Under Secretary Sewall as part of the U.S. delegation. On May 6, Under Secretary Sewall will meet with Indonesian Government officials, and civil society representatives on a range of key issues including democracy promotion, anti-corruption efforts, security sector reform, transnational crime, and human rights. Under Secretary Sewall will also deliver opening remarks at the Multilateral Wildlife Trafficking Workshop in Bogor, the first major wildlife trafficking event in Indonesia since Secretary Kerry and the Indonesian Minister of Forestry signed a Memorandum of Understanding to Conserve Wildlife and Combat Wildlife Trafficking on February 17. In Burma, Under Secretary Sewall, joined by Senior Advisor for Burma Judith Cefkin, will meet with senior government officials, opposition leaders, civil society representatives, ethnic minority leaders, and other key stakeholders to discuss Burma’s overall reform efforts, the situation in Rakhine State and Meikhtila, progress on the peace process, solutions for curbing ethnic and sectarian conflict, as well as for combating human trafficking, and support for Burma’s ongoing effort to advance democracy, justice and accountability, and respect for human rights. In Nigeria, Under Secretary Sewall will meet with senior government officials and other key stakeholders to discuss our important partnership with Nigeria and efforts to ensure a peaceful, prosperous, stable, and democratic future for the Nigerian people.
