Mayor Annise D. Parker of Houston, Texas yesterday declared April 22nd as Community College Initiative (CCI) Program Day. The CCI Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and administered in partnership with the Community College Consortium, IREX, and Northwest CCI, provides a rigorous academic program to students from around the world at U.S. community colleges. This program builds technical skills, enhances leadership capabilities, and strengthens English language proficiency. CCI also provides opportunities for professional internships, service learning, and community engagement activities. Mayor Parker proclaimed CCI Day at the Houston City meeting on April 22nd. CCI participants who are currently studying at Houston Community College joined in the meeting. A current CCI program participant from Pakistan, who completed an internship at the office of Mayor Parker, received the proclamation and made a brief presentation on the CCI program. Houston Community College currently hosts 16 CCI participants from 10 countries, including: Bangladesh, Brazil, Colombia, Egypt, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, South Africa, and Turkey. These students are pursuing study in the fields of business, information technology, and media. In the United States overall, there are 222 CCI participants from 15 countries at 16 host campuses.
