From April 29 to May 3, 45 law enforcement and security professionals from 37 countries will assemble in New York City for the sixth annual “Combating International Crime: Global Cooperation” conference. The participants will explore the structure of the U.S. criminal justice system, and U.S. responses to a range of threats, while developing relationships and partnerships between themselves and American colleagues. Today, cross-border contacts and collaboration are more critical than ever in mitigating threats to the public. Conference panels will address interagency cooperation, cyber-security challenges, surveillance and civil rights issues, money laundering, organized crime, and law enforcement training, among other topics. Panelists will include representatives from government, private sector, and academic organizations, including the New York Police Department, the New York County District Attorney’s Office, AT&T, the Center for Internet Security, Fordham University School of Law, and the City University of New York (CUNY). The conference will also feature keynote speakers, including David M. Luna, Senior Director of the Office of National Security and Diplomacy in the State Department’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs. The State Department’s Office of the Coordinator for Cyber Issues will participate and moderate the panel titled “The Cyber-Security Challenge.” Additionally, participants will visit sites throughout the New York City area to explore best practices for protecting and securing high-threat landmarks, including visits to the United Nations, Madison Square Garden, Citi Field sports arena, New York Penn Station, and the Port of New York and New Jersey. The conference is organized as a special initiative of the State Department’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP).
