[wanabidii] SEXUALIZED CITIZEN TV NEWS ANCHOR

Friday, February 21, 2014

Last year, an uproar on scantily dressed female news anchors apparently worked to stem the attitude which had infuriated many Kenyans.

After several months of recess, this narrow mind-set is gradually returning to the TV screens. Watching Citizen TV anchor Lilian Kanene on Friday 21 February was a clear expression that clothes are again becoming more important than the news that the anchors pass to viewers.

In an editorial cartoon in the Daily Nation last year, Gado suggested that the images beamed to viewers of female anchors clad in tight-fitting dresses that  accented a waist-to-hip ratio was being fueled by a drop in news quality and sexualizing the anchors was seen as a way of attracting more viewers especially young men.

Social commentator Phillip Mwaniki called it “dumbing down of our news” and went on to say that the “female news anchors have crossed a line of what exactly is decent and trashy, what should be worn in the studio and at the club.”
