On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I congratulate President Choummaly Sayasone and the people of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic as you celebrate your National Day on December 2. This year marks both the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and 60 years of diplomatic relations between the United States and Laos. With our current level of engagement on health, environment, energy, and education, our cooperation has never been stronger. The United States looks forward to continuing to work with the people of Laos on issues rooted in the past, as well looking ahead for new opportunities to enhance our partnership. As Chairman of ASEAN next year, Laos will play an important role in leading the region to maintain peace and security and promote prosperity. The success of Laos’s chairmanship is important to the United States, and we stand ready to assist you. In the coming year, I wish the Lao people peace, prosperity, and happiness. |
