In an important symbol of our commitment and enduring friendship with the Holy See, U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See Kenneth F. Hackett, Under Secretary for Management Patrick F. Kennedy, and the Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations Director Lydia Muniz, alongside local officials, dedicated the new U.S. Embassy chancery building in Rome today.

The newly renovated chancery building provides a secure and modern workspace for embassy staff and incorporates various systems efficiency upgrades to conserve resources and reduce operating costs. The building is the first U.S. diplomatic facility to obtain certification in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) in the Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance system.

Davis Brody Bond Architects and Planners of New York, New York, is the architect, and NIKA/EMR, a joint venture, of Rockville, Maryland, is the construction contractor.

Since 1999, as part of the Department’s Capital Security Construction Program, the Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations (OBO) has completed 122 new diplomatic facilities and has an additional 46 projects in design or under construction.

OBO’s mission is to provide safe, secure, and functional facilities that represent the U.S. government to the host nation and support our staff in the achievement of U.S. foreign policy objectives. These facilities represent American values and the best in American architecture, engineering, technology, sustainability, art, culture, and construction execution.
