Vanuatu Independence Day

Press Statement
John Kerry
Secretary of State
Washington, DC
July 28, 2015

On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I offer our warmest congratulations to the people of Vanuatu on your Independence Day this July 30.

The United States and Vanuatu continue to cooperate on key global issues after nearly 30 years of close diplomatic relations. We are proud to have 59 Peace Corps volunteers serving in Vanuatu, directly contributing to Vanuatu’s economic sustainability and future progress.

We are also happy that both our countries have made protecting our oceans and adapting to the impacts of climate change a common concern. Vanuatu’s impassioned advocacy related to addressing the challenge of climate change inspires us all to work even harder, especially in the lead up to the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Paris later this year.

The strength of the people of Vanuatu is evident in its response to the devastation caused by Cyclone Pam, and the United States looks forward to continuing to assist in this effort and to enhancing overall cooperation between our two nations in the years to come.

As you commemorate your Independence Day, know that our bilateral relationship is strong, and that the American people and I support Vanuatu and wish its people a joyful celebration.
