On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I extend my heartiest congratulations to the people of Kiribati as you celebrate Independence Day on July 12. The Republic of Kiribati has partnered with the United States on a variety of issues from sustainable energy to conservation. We welcome further efforts like the November 2014 Cooperative Arrangement to help support research and conservation activities for the Phoenix Ocean Arc. Such activities strengthen ties between our countries and set a precedent that enhances knowledge-sharing and innovation to adapt to the impact of climate change. I was proud to stand together with President Tong at the 2014 Our Ocean Conference. We underlined the importance of coming together for a single comprehensive global ocean strategy. Kiribati’s leadership in the field of climate change is an inspiration to all nations. We recognize our shared responsibility to address this vital international security issue and work together to reach a historic agreement in Paris this year. I wish you and the people of Kiribati a joyful Independence Day with health, prosperity, and peace to all. I look forward to deepening the strong relationship between our two nations for many more years to come. |
