On the weekend before World Oceans Day, the U.S. Department of State’s Fishackathon begins today in 12 cities around the world. The Secretary’s Office of Global Partnerships held the first Fishackathon last June around Secretary Kerry’s Our Ocean conference, bringing together 150 volunteer coders and technologists in five domestic cities to develop tech solutions and apps addressing challenges in sustainable fishing, such as overfishing and illegal fishing. The Fishackathon partnership brings together the U.S. government with the private sector and civil society to answer Secretary Kerry’s call to save our ocean. This year’s events kick off with opening receptions in each city, and continue throughout the weekend to let participants develop their solutions to problem statements solicited from fisheries experts around the world. At the end of the hackathons, teams will present their solutions and a panel of judges will nominate a winner for each site. After the Fishackathon ends, a global panel of mobile technology and fisheries experts will review the winning solutions from each site and select two grand prize-winning teams. The “Our Ocean” grand prize will include a paid trip for two team members to attend and demo their solution at the Our Ocean conference in Valparaíso, Chile in October 2015. The “/tone/GSMA mFish” grand prize will reward the team with the best mobile app with a paid trip for two team members to the 2016 GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain and the opportunity to showcase their apps on a world stage.
