Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor Tom Malinowski traveled to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo June 1-4. The Assistant Secretary met with government officials from both countries and raised the importance of credible, timely elections that respect existing constitutional provisions, including provisions on term limits. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo he raised the critical importance of conducting transparent government investigations when security forces are accused of human rights abuses, as well as the need to differentiate between peaceful expression and violent action. On June 4, the Assistant Secretary delivered remarks at an inaugural event in Kinshasa for the African Center for Justice, a U.S.-funded regional judicial training initiative focused on building the capacity of independent judiciaries in the DRC, ROC, Burundi, and Rwanda.
