United States and France to Sign Agreement on Compensation for Certain Victims of Holocaust-Related Deportation from France Who Are Not Covered by French Programs

Notice to the Press
Office of the Spokesperson
Washington, DC
December 5, 2014

The United States and France have reached an agreement for substantial compensation in connection with the wrongs suffered by Holocaust victims deported from France. The centerpiece of the agreement is a $60 million lump sum payment by France to the United States, which will distribute the funds to eligible claimants. The compensation is based on France’s recognition that Americans, Israelis, and other foreigners who were deported during the Holocaust have not been able to gain access to the French pension program. Please refer to the Fact Sheet for more information.

The signing ceremony will take place on Monday, December 8, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. in the Department of State Treaty Room. On the U.S. side, the agreement will be signed by Ambassador Stuart E. Eizenstat, the U.S. lead negotiator and the Secretary of State’s Special Adviser on Holocaust Issues. For France, the agreement will be signed by the lead French negotiator and Ambassador for Human Rights, Patrizianna Sparacino-Thiellay.

Pre-set time for video cameras: 10:45 a.m. from the 23rd Street Entrance Lobby. Final access time for journalists and still photographers: 11:00 a.m. from the 23rd Street Entrance Lobby.
