At 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 10, 2014, Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Tom Malinowski and Special Envoy for North Korean Human Rights Issues Robert King will meet with North Korean defectors and civil society groups to discuss the human rights situation in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). This conversation reflects the broad international view that North Korea’s human rights situation is unacceptable and that its leaders must be held accountable for the ongoing, widespread and systematic human rights violations taking place there. The United States has over many years supported international mechanisms to document and bring attention to the North Korean Government’s human rights record, in particular the ongoing work of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the DPRK. We strongly backed the creation of the Commission of Inquiry and support its comprehensive findings, and encourage the international community, including the UN Security Council, to consider the commission’s recommendations for accountability. The event will take place in the Dean Acheson Auditorium in the Harry S. Truman Building at the State Department. The remarks will be open to the press. Preset for video cameras: 12:15 p.m. in the 23rd Street Lobby. Final access time for journalists and still photographers: 12:45 p.m. from the 23rd Street Entrance Lobby. Media representatives may attend this event upon presentation of one of the following: (1) A U.S. Government-issued identification card (Department of State, White House, Congress, Department of Defense or Foreign Press Center), (2) a media-issued photo identification card, or (3) a letter from their employer on letterhead verifying their employment as a journalist, accompanied by an official photo identification card (driver's license, passport).
