Press Releases: Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board Elects Chair and Vice Chair for 2015 11/25/2014 03:44 PM EST Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board Elects Chair and Vice Chair for 2015 Media Note Office of the Spokesperson Washington, DC November 25, 2014 On November 13, 2014, Betty Castor was elected as Chair and Laura Skandera Trombley was elected as Vice Chair of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. They will begin their one-year terms of office on January 1, 2015. Castor succeeds Tom Healy, who served three terms as Chair, and Skandera Trombley succeeds Betty Castor as Vice Chair. The 12-member Board was established by the U.S. Congress and is appointed by the President of the United States to oversee the worldwide Fulbright Program. Betty Castor served as the president of the University of South Florida (USF) in Tampa, Florida, from 1994 until 1999. Previously, she was the Florida commissioner of education and the first woman elected to the Florida Cabinet. Castor also served as president and CEO of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, and most recently as the executive director of the Patel Center for Global Solutions at USF. She served three terms in the Florida Senate. Castor is a member of the Tampa Bay Committee on Foreign Relations and the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay. In 2010 she received the Distinguished Woman in International Commerce Award from the World Trade Center of Tampa Bay. She began her education career as a secondary school teacher in Uganda and continues her support of the Teachers for East Africa Alumni Foundation. Castor received her bachelor’s degree from Rowan University and her master’s degree from the University of Miami. President Obama appointed Castor to the Fulbright Board in 2011 and announced his intention to reappoint her to the Fulbright Board on October 31, 2014. Dr. Laura Skandera Trombley, the president of Pitzer College since July 2002, is a noted Mark Twain scholar, author and recognized champion of liberal arts education. Under her leadership, Pitzer College has experienced a rise in worldwide recognition and became one of the most selective higher education institutions in the United States. Nationally, Pitzer College has been the leader among bachelor’s institutions in the number of Fulbright fellowships awarded per 1,000 students for the past ten years. Skandera Trombley has also shepherded the transformation of Pitzer’s campus with 48 percent of all buildings receiving LEED Platinum or Gold certification during her tenure. She is the author of five books including Mark Twain's Other Woman. She earned her B.A. and M.A. at Pepperdine University and her Ph.D. from the University of Southern California. President Obama appointed Skandera Trombley to the Fulbright Board in December 2012. The Fulbright Program, the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program, is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. Since 1946, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 360,000 participants from more than 180 countries with the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.
