The United States strongly condemns today’s despicable attack against civilians gathered in Tahrir Square in Sana’a, which killed at least 43 Yemenis, including women and children. The Yemeni people have lived with senseless violence for far too long and the recent increase in hostilities against innocent civilians only undermines the progress Yemen has made in achieving meaningful reform since 2011. We also condemn the attacks on Yemeni security forces in Hadramawt on October 9, as well as in Bayda on October 8, aimed at undermining Yemen’s stability. We call upon all Yemenis to refrain from violence, to return to peaceful expression of dissent, and work peacefully through the country’s political transition process to make their voices heard. We urge all sides to fully and rapidly implement Yemen’s Peace and National Partnership Agreement (PNPA), which builds on the GCC Initiative and Implementation Mechanism, the National Dialogue Conference Outcomes, and relevant UN Security Council Resolutions, to meet the aspirations of the Yemeni people. Furthermore, we stand with the international community in supporting President Hadi, as the legitimately elected leader of Yemen, in his efforts to lead the country during this fragile period. We call on all parties to support his efforts to implement all aspects of the agreement. |
