On Wednesday, September 24, Secretary of State John Kerry met with a delegation of prominent Syrian women human rights and peace activists on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly.

He stressed the U.S. Government’s strong support for Syrian civil society and human rights defenders, who, despite abhorrent daily violence and grave risks posed by ISIL, the Assad regime and extremist groups, work together to advocate for human rights, counter extremist influence, deliver critical humanitarian relief, and develop common positions on their vision for a transition.

Secretary Kerry was joined by Anne Patterson, Assistant Secretary for Near Eastern Affairs; Tom Malinowski, Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights & Labor; Daniel Rubinstein, U.S. Special Envoy for Syria; and Catherine M. Russell, Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women's Issues.

The Syrian grassroots leaders presented concrete recommendations—shaped by their extensive experience—for constructing a more inclusive political transition and humanitarian relief effort in Syria.
