Ambassador William R. Brownfield, Assistant Secretary of State for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, will travel to Miami, Florida on September 26. Ambassador Brownfield will deliver keynote remarks for the graduating class of 42 Guatemalan police officers who participated in training courses with the Miami-Dade Police Department (MPDP) in partnership with the Department’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL). The training included community policing, crime prevention, and police leadership and management. He will also announce a new cooperative agreement between the Department and the MDPD which will provide for training of foreign law enforcement personnel, as part of the Department’s continued partnership with the MDPD. The Department of State has similar partnerships with more than 70 criminal justice entities at the state, county and municipal level around the United States that assist in enhancing countries’ capacity to fight crime, administer justice, safeguard the rule of law and respect human rights. Ambassador Brownfield will also visit Florida International University, where he will meet with FIU leadership, and address FIU faculty and students on the topic of drugs, security, and U.S. policy toward Latin America. The graduation ceremony begins at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 26 at the Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue Training Center, 9300 NW 41 St., Doral, Florida 33178. This event is open to the press and will be followed by a brief question and answer session with Miami-Dade Police Department Director J.D. Patterson and Ambassador Brownfield.
