Secretary of State John Kerry delivered keynote remarks yesterday morning at the second Frontiers in Development Forum convened by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Since the first forum in 2012, Frontiers in Development seeks to encourage forward-looking, provocative debate that can advance development policy. Over two days of discussions, participants from governments, private sector, and civil society engaged in high-profile talks and interactive panels on critical development issues. This year’s theme was “Eradicating Extreme Poverty.” Secretary Kerry reinforced the role of development as a pillar of U.S. foreign policy. He spoke about the importance of inclusive economic growth and ending extreme poverty, advancing gender equality, and integrating sustainability and climate change into global development efforts. He challenged world leaders to agree on a focused, measurable and ambitious post-2015 development agenda that responds to the aspirations of young people everywhere. He also announced two new initiatives by the U.S. government to mobilize new sources of financing and use data to deliver greater accountability and more effective development. PEPFAR is committing $63.5 million through USAID to support five countries – Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Nigeria, and Vietnam – improve their domestic resource mobilization efforts to control their HIV/AIDS epidemics and help deliver an AIDS-free generation. PEPFAR estimates this initial support has the potential to yield a return on investment of more than $1 billion over three years. Learn more at PEPFAR.gov. Secretary Kerry welcomed the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) and its $50 million commitment to the Global Resilience Partnership, joining USAID and the Rockefeller Foundation for a total Partnership commitment of $150 million. He also announced the launch of the Global Resilience Challenge, a grant competition focused on developing and implementing locally driven, high-impact solutions that build resilience in three focal regions: the Horn of Africa, the Sahel and South & Southeast Asia.
