Sixteen civil society leaders from Central America and the Dominican Republic will visit Washington, D.C., Santa Fe, and Seattle starting August 18 to participate in the U.S. Department of State’s Mujeres Adelante (“Women Moving Forward”) initiative.

In its third year, Mujeres Adelante is part of the U.S. Strategy to Prevent and Respond to Gender Based Violence Globally, which outlines efforts to raise the status of women and girls around the world and underscores the U.S. government’s commitment to preventing and responding to gender-based violence. One in three women worldwide will experience gender-based violence in her lifetime. The United States has made preventing and responding to gender-based violence a cornerstone of our commitment to advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment around the world.

After meeting with government and non-profit leaders working to end gender-based violence in both Washington and Santa Fe, the women will spend a week in Seattle participating in training and workshops with the Seattle International Foundation. The women are from Belize, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama. Following the program, the participants will return to their countries to utilize the knowledge and skills developed in the United States to reduce the prevalence of gender-based violence in their organizations and communities.
