Tamil Nadu to construct 62 sub-stations to overcome frequent power outages
CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government has proposed to construct 62 sub-stations to overcome the frequent power outages dogging several areas of Chennai and other parts of the state.Chief minister J Jayalalithaa informed the assembly on Tuesday that the 60 sub-stations -- three 400KV, nine 230KV, 38 110KV and 10 33KV sub-stations -- and transmission lines to the extent of 2500km would be set up in this financial year at a cost of Rs 5,284 crore. In addition, two 230KV sub-stations would be set up at West Mambalam and Porur in Chennai at a cost of Rs 338.08 crore.Listing out various steps taken by the AIADMK government, the chief minister said after her government assumed office, 2500MW of thermal power had been added to the generation capacity. Apart from this, steps had been taken to purchase power from private producers, she added. These steps have mitigated the power shortage which was around 4000MW when the government assumed office, the chief minister said."Around 462MW of power generated by the first unit of the Kudankulam nuclear power project is added to the state’s kitty and another 100MW was allocated to the state. Thus Tamil Nadu receives 562MW from the first unit," the chief minister said. "Power generation by the second unit of the Kudankulam project will commence by year-end and Tamil Nadu will get 463MW from it," the chief minister said. However, the Nuclear Power Corporation Limited website says the second unit will be operational only by March next year.
