Proposed Legislation on Marriage Restrictions in Burma

Taken Question
Office of the Spokesperson
Washington, DC
June 11, 2014

Question: What is the U.S. position on Burma’s new interfaith marriage law?

Answer: The United States opposes any measure that would criminalize interfaith marriages. Such a step would be inconsistent with the government’s efforts to promote tolerance and respect for human rights.

We have expressed our concerns to the highest levels of the Burmese government.

We continue to engage and encourage government, religious, political and community leaders to advocate restraint, tolerance and reconciliation. We support Burma's continuing reform and have promoted our expectations for an inclusive and tolerant Burma.

More broadly, we continue to have serious concerns about other pending legislation that could have a detrimental effect on religious freedom.
