The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Public Affairs will host a Google+ Hangout to discuss Fishackathons coordinated by the Office of Global Partnerships on Tuesday, June 17, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. (EDT). Finalists from each hackathon location will be joined by Deputy Special Representative for the State Department’s Office of Global Partnerships Thomas Debass who will moderate the discussion. The Hangout will be broadcast live on the U.S. Department of State’s YouTube channel and Google+ page.

On June 13, the Secretary’s Office of Global Partnerships and private sector partner /tone™ will coordinate five Fishackathons across the country to create solutions for the sustainable management of fisheries. The Fishackathons will be hosted by the National Aquarium in Baltimore, New England Aquarium by University of Massachusetts Boston, Venture Hive in Miami, the Monterey Bay Aquarium in Silicon Valley, and GreenWave at WeWork in New York City in support of Secretary Kerry’s “Our Ocean” Conference on June 16 and 17.

A finalist from each Fishackathon location will present the application he or she developed during the event and answer questions submitted via Twitter and the Fishackathon Google+ page from a panel of judges and the public. The grand prize winner will receive a trip to the Philippines to visit the small-scale fishery his or her application will potentially impact. This Hangout is an opportunity to hear how the U.S. government partnered with the private sector and civil society to answer Secretary Kerry’s call to action in saving our ocean. Submit questions for Deputy Special Representative Debass or any of the finalists using the hashtag #CodeForFish.
