Press Releases: Secretary of State John Kerry To Deliver Remarks at the 90th Anniversary of the United States Foreign Service 05/21/2014 12:31 PM EDT Secretary of State John Kerry To Deliver Remarks at the 90th Anniversary of the United States Foreign Service Notice to the Press Office of the Spokesperson Washington, DC May 21, 2014 U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry will deliver remarks at an event celebrating the 90th Anniversary of the United States Foreign Service dinner at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 22, 2014, at the Department of State. Former Secretary Colin Powell, former Senator Richard Lugar, and U.S. Representative Chris Van Hollen will join the Secretary to help celebrate the 90th Anniversary. The modern Foreign Service was created on May 24, 1924, with the passage of the Rogers Act establishing the current merit-based, professional Foreign Service. Today, approximately 13,000 diplomats and development professionals work across five government agencies: the Department of State, the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Department of Commerce, the Department of Agriculture, and the Broadcasting Board of Governors. These Foreign Service Officers and specialists represent the United States at 285 diplomatic posts abroad and contribute to the national security and prosperity of all Americans every day. Secretary Kerry’s remarks will be open to the press. Pre-set time for video cameras: 5:30 p.m. from the C Street Entrance. Final access time for journalists and still photographers: 6:15 p.m. from the C Street Entrance. The remarks will be streamed live on www.state.gov.
