The U.S. Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy will meet in open session at the George Washington University’s Elliot School of International Affairs (1957 E Street, NW -- Lindner Family Commons, Sixth Floor) in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, May 8 from 10-11:30a.m. The session’s topic, “Disasters, Wars and Cultural Heritage Preservation: The Role of Arts and Culture in National Security” is meant to foster understanding of the whole-of-government approach to activities intended to protect foreign cultures and address the value of arts and culture promotion in U.S. foreign policy. The meeting will feature Molly Fannon, Director of the Office of International Relations at the Smithsonian Institution; Maria Kouroupas, Director of the Cultural Heritage Center at the U.S. Department of State; and Rick Ruth, Senior Advisor in the Educational and Cultural Affairs Bureau at the U.S. Department of State. Other U.S. government representatives, who work on cultural heritage preservation, including those from the Department of Defense and U.S. Agency for International Development, will be in attendance, along with members of the research community. This meeting is open to the public. To attend and make any requests for reasonable accommodation, please e-mail pdcommission@state.gov by 5pm on Tuesday, May 6, 2014. Please plan to arrive for the meeting by 9:45am to allow for a prompt meeting start.
