On April 13-16, 70 Fulbright Visiting Scholars from 40 countries will convene in Louisville, Kentucky, for a Fulbright Enrichment Seminar on the theme of “Strengthening Communities through Diversity and Action.” This is the first Fulbright Enrichment Seminar to be held in Louisville, and the theme will focus on the recent work done locally by citizens, organizations, and local government in creating a more compassionate city. Participating Fulbright Scholars will develop a better understanding of U.S. contemporary life and culture, policy formulation, and public attitudes on an array of issues related to community building and fostering diversity. This seminar is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and administered by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES). The four-day seminar will take place at sites throughout Louisville and will feature keynote speakers, panel discussions, interactive workshops, community service activities, and site visits. The seminar will coincide with the 2014 Louisville Mayor’s Week of Service, during which all Louisville residents are encouraged to “give a day” of service to others. The City of Louisville received the 2012 Jack Olive International Compassionate City Award from the Compassionate Action Network International Institution in Seattle, and is considered a leader in community public service programming. Members of the press are welcome to attend any of the following events with RSVP only: Monday, April 14 Opening Keynote address by Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer: “Creating and Supporting a Model Compassionate City” from 8:15 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. at the Muhammad Ali Center (144 North Sixth Street). Panel Discussion: “Diversity and Compassion – Building Up Our Strengths and Facing Challenges Ahead” at the Muhammad Ali Center. Site-Visits to Community Organizations from 2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 15 Panel discussion: “Compassionate Service across Sectors” from 9:00 a.m. - 10:15 a.m. at the University of Louisville. Keynote Lunch Remarks by Susan A. Berry, President and CEO of Community Foundation of Louisville from 12:15 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. at University of Louisville. Community Service Activities from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Closing Farm Dinner Reception with remarks from Mayor Greg Fischer from 6:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 16 Keynote Closing Remarks by Congressman John Yarmuth (3rd District, Kentucky) from 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. at Spalding University (Egan Leadership Center Lectorium). The Louisville Fulbright Visiting Scholar Enrichment Seminar is the final Visiting Scholar enrichment seminar of 2014 sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs as part of its flagship Fulbright Program.
