Extent: 100 %
Location: Department of Political Science, Lund
First day of employment: 1 September 2014
Official Records Number: SPA 2014/10
Job assignments
The PhD programme amounts to 240 credits (equivalent to four years of full-time study) and concludes with the doctoral student's public defence of his or her printed thesis. Those appointed to doctoral studentships shall primarily devote themselves to their studies. The regulations on employment of doctoral students are to be found in Chapter 5 Sections 1–7 of the Higher Education Ordinance. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the research and teaching environment of the department and perform departmental duties, primarily teaching, amounting to a maximum of 20 per cent of working hours. A general syllabus and other information is available at http://www.svet.lu.se/english_pages/Css_utbildning.lasso?-token.page=forskarstudier_sida1.
The postgraduate position is part of the research project 'Navigating Institutional Complexity in Global Climate Governance: Causes, Consequences, and Responses'. A project description is available at: http://www.svet.lu.se/english_pages/css_forskning.lasso?-token.page=forskningsprojekt_detaljer&-token.id=118 The project is funded by the Swedish research council Formas and is managed by Fariborz Zelli from the Department of Political Science. It is a collaboration between the department and the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI).
The aim of the project is to analyze the increasing institutional complexity of global climate governance. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and its Kyoto Protocol do not operate in an institutional vacuum. They interact with a complex environment of many other institutions, both public and private, that operate at different scales and across different sectors and policy fields. This institutional complexity matters: it has major consequences for key governance aspects like effectiveness, legitimacy and participation.
The successful candidate is expected to engage actively in the project team and conduct analyses that contribute to the general aims of the project. The doctoral student will be free, however, to conduct independent research, to select research questions, to develop theoretical approaches and decide on research methods. As the project is based on teamwork, the successful candidate will be expected to work mainly at the department's premises in Lund. There, the candidate will benefit from a sprawling research network. A core departmental research area is environmental politics, organized by the internationally renowned Environmental Politics Research Group (EPRG) and linked to a series of inter-disciplinary initiatives of scholarly excellence at Lund University, for instance: the strategic research area 'Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in a Changing Climate' (BECC), the international project office of the Earth System Governance (ESG) project, and the Lund University Centre for Sustainability Studies (LUCSUS).
Eligibility/Entry Requirements
To have basic eligibility for third cycle (doctoral) studies, a student must have
(1) passed an exam at second cycle (Master?s) level,
(2) fulfilled the course requirements for at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 at second cycle level, or
(3) acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way.
An applicant who, before 1 July 2007, fulfilled the requirements for basic eligibility for admission to research studies that were current at the time (i.e. who has at least 180 first-cycle credits) is also considered to have basic eligibility thereafter (up to June 2015 at the latest).
In addition to the general entry requirement for third-cycle courses and study programmes, the applicant must have at least 30 credits in Political Science at second-cycle level or have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in Sweden or abroad. The applicant must also have completed an independent project comprising at least 15 credits at second-cycle level.
Basis of Assessment
The regulations on employment of doctoral students are to be found in the Higher Education Ordinance. Only those who are or have been admitted to third-cycle courses and study programmes at a higher education institution may be appointed to doctoral studentships.
In accordance with the chapter 5, paragraph 5, the determining selection criterion is the applicant's perceived ability to profit from and successfully complete their studies, as indicated by academic qualifications and merits.
The quality of the previously written thesis papers and publications is the primary indicator of this ability. Moreover, the project plan will serve as a major assessment criterion. Further assessment criteria are, secondarily, the quality of coursework in or of relevance to political science, and thirdly, the quality of other coursework.
The applicant must be strongly committed to research studies and possess good teamwork and communication skills as the research will be conducted within a research team.
Knowledge and skills in the fields of international relations and environmental politics are special qualifications. We particularly welcome applicants that plan to conduct research in one of the following fields: climate geo-engineering; or reducing carbon emissions from deforestation. The applicant is therefore to describe clearly such knowledge and skills and any experience from other disciplines or interdisciplinary contexts.
Proficiency in spoken and written English is of great importance.
Interviews will be conducted with short-listed candidates in the final stage of the process.
