[wanabidii] Math Problem

Friday, November 15, 2013
Some teacher at my daughter's school thought he was dealing with his usual Grade 11 (Form 3) students that he's used to every year. Every year at this time he gives his  Form 3 students a Math problem and the winner, the first student to solve it, gets $20. But it has to be solved in 5 min or less. A lot of times, no kid makes the 5 minutes deadline so the teacher gets to keep his cash.

My daughter solved the problem in slightly less than 3 min. I knew that this kid could handle her Math but this shocked me. Even I, an engineer, need 5 minutes or more yawa !!!!! As a result, the kid has her Saturday planned out to go buy some clothes that she had in mind. I'm not complaining. Let her use the money anyway she pleases.

Anyway, let me give you a chance to try it out. time yourself.

Question:
Brian agrees to a house-painting job for $900. He takes 4 days longer than he expected, and he thus earns $18.75 less per day on average than would have been the case had he completed it in the days agreed/expected. In how many days did he originally expect to complete the painting job?

Hint: Let the Number of Days he originally expected to complete the job be   X
