It is ironical that 90% of Africans engage in farming activities and yet it is farmers who are without food and go hungry. Africa's 900 million farmers are bogged down by disincentives that range from bad politics, impassable roads, and unfriendly commercial banks (DW.de; accessed March 29, 2013).
Poorly developed political institutions promote short term thinking among the political class and the electorate. Farmers opt for handouts instead of choosing technological knowledge to improve their farm outputs (Africasciencenews.org; accessed March 29, 2013). Warped democratic ideals produce political leaders in Africa that prefer poor populations so as to manipulate them during elections.
To improve food security, Africans must urgently rethink the culture of handouts and invest in long term strategic thinking.
