Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor Tom Malinowski will travel to Burma and the U.S. Pacific Command (PACOM) in Hawaii, January 17-21, 2016. In Burma, January 17-19, Assistant Secretary Malinowski will join Deputy Secretary Tony Blinken for meetings with senior government officials and continue on to Yangon for meetings with civil society representatives to discuss a wide range of human rights and governance issues, including the ongoing democratic transition, the national reconciliation process, and conditions in Rakhine State. He will also host a public discussion with Burmese entrepreneurs, journalists, and students on national identity, tolerance, and political transition in Burma. In Hawaii, January 20-21, Assistant Secretary Malinowski will meet with senior officials from PACOM, including PACOM Commander Admiral Harry Harris, to discuss the role of human rights and democracy in U.S. military engagement throughout the Asia-Pacific region.
