Bureau of International Information Programs (IIP) Coordinator Macon Phillips will travel to Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Cape Town, South Africa, October 19–24.

During his visit to Johannesburg, October 19–20, Coordinator Phillips will visit the Rosa Parks Library in Soweto, where he will join members of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) Network, a virtual community of over 150,000, in facilitating an online course on the “Fundamentals of Starting and Running a Business.” Coordinator Phillips will also discuss digital media strategy and opportunities with two primary partners of the U.S. Mission in South Africa – the Municipality of Johannesburg and the Nelson Mandela Foundation. He also will meet with prominent online journalists and social media influencers.

While in Pretoria on October 21, Coordinator Phillips will kick off the YALI TechCamp, a two-day, interactive, capacity-building event focused on “Digital Strategies for Grassroots Organizing.” He also will meet with YALI Network members to discuss the challenge and impact of climate change on their communities and launch a new online course on climate change.

In Cape Town, October 22–25, Coordinator Phillips will join local elected officials for the grand opening of the American Corner, an in-person, public engagement space. He will also meet with 2015 Mandela Washington Fellows, participants in President Obama’s flagship exchange program that empowers young people through academic coursework, leadership training, and networking.
