Press Releases: Assistant Secretary Ryan Travels to Beijing, Seoul, and Tokyo 10/30/2015 04:38 PM EDT Assistant Secretary Ryan Travels to Beijing, Seoul, and Tokyo Media Note Office of the Spokesperson Washington, DC October 30, 2015 Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Evan Ryan will travel to Beijing, Seoul, and Tokyo, November 1-10, to engage international stakeholders in the Department of State’s cross-cultural and educational diplomacy efforts. In Beijing, Assistant Secretary Ryan will meet with Chinese cultural and educational officials and alumni of U.S. government exchange programs to discuss youth engagement, civic participation, and entrepreneurship. This visit pursues ECA’s obligations under the U.S.-China Consultation on People-to-People Exchange (CPE) to promote cooperation in culture, education, sports, women’s issues, science and technology, and health. In Seoul, Assistant Secretary Ryan will engage with current exchange participants and alumni, including Fulbright English Teaching Assistants, and participate in a discussion led by EducationUSA on educational programs available to Korean college students. In Tokyo, Assistant Secretary Ryan will meet with Japanese government officials to discuss ways to increase people-to-people ties and exchange programs between the United States and Japan. She will meet with representatives from the U.S.-Japan Conference on Cultural and Educational Interchange (CULCON). She will also meet with the Education Task Force (endorsed by the Obama – Abe Joint Statement of 2014) to discuss our goal of doubling two-way student exchange participation by 2020. She will also participate in the U.S.-Japan Council Annual Conference and discuss ways to expand and strengthen educational exchange between the two countries. She will join a roundtable with principals of Japanese girls’ high schools to encourage civic participation and volunteerism on environmental issues. The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs’ mission is to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries through educational and cultural exchange programs.
