On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I congratulate the people of Ecuador on the 206th anniversary of your independence on August 10. On this special occasion, the United States renews its bond of friendship with the Ecuadorian people. We look forward to building on our relationship through mutual respect and collaboration in areas of common interest, from our strong partnership on counter-narcotics issues to cooperation and technical assistance on disaster mitigation. Our nations are also bound by a strong commitment to education as the route to prosperity, which is evident in the impressive level of student exchange between our two countries. Thousands of U.S. students study in Ecuador each year, experiencing the richness of your culture and the beauty of your country. Likewise, thousands of Ecuadorians study in the United States annually, further deepening our nations’ long-standing ties. We are proud to support these exchanges under President Obama’s 100,000 Strong in the Americas initiative, as well as through our many higher education programs including our flagship international educational exchange program, the Fulbright Program. I wish Ecuadorians everywhere health, prosperity, and happiness on the anniversary of your independence. |
