Question: Can you provide a readout of the ASEAN-U.S. Dialogue? Answer: The United States and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) concluded their 28th Dialogue on May 15. Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, Daniel Russel, and his counterpart, U Aung Lynn, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar, co-chaired the day-long set of meetings with ASEAN Senior Officials. The Dialogue reinforced the increasingly close and collaborative relationship between the United States and ASEAN with both sides agreeing to work towards the elevation of the U.S.-ASEAN relationship to a strategic partnership in time for the East Asia Summit (EAS) in November. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to jointly realize solutions to pressing global, regional and transnational issues affecting the region, including climate change, illegal, unregulated and unreported (IUU) fishing, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HA/DR), and recent developments in the South China Sea. Both sides discussed ASEAN’s efforts to move toward greater economic integration and areas of expanded economic cooperation. The United States reiterated the importance of ASEAN unity and centrality in the regional security architecture and both parties underscored the importance of the EAS as the premier leaders-led forum for addressing strategic, high-level political and security matters. The United States and ASEAN discussed the migrant situation in Southeast Asia and the need to work expeditiously to save lives and to address the underlying challenges that contribute to the migration. The very productive discussions in the Dialogue are a tangible demonstration of our commitment to a rebalance of U.S. foreign policy towards Asia. Stay connected with the State Department:
