The United States condemns the attack in Erbil today in which a vehicle-born improvised explosive device (VBIED) detonated outside the U.S. Consulate and took a number of innocent lives. We extend our deepest condolences to the families of those who were injured and killed. All Chief of Mission personnel have been accounted for and there are no reports of injuries to Mission personnel. We appreciate the rapid response of the Kurdistan Regional Government authorities to this matter and we will work with them to investigate the incident to determine the facts behind the explosion. We additionally extend our condolences to those killed in terrorist attacks today in Baghdad, and wish a speedy recovery for those who were injured. The United States will continue to stand with the people of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region and all Iraqis as we work together in confronting these terrorist acts and towards our shared goal of degrading and defeating ISIL. |
