Press Releases: Secretary Kerry Travels to Iqaluit 04/17/2015 12:40 PM EDT Secretary Kerry Travels to Iqaluit Press Statement Marie Harf Acting Department Spokesperson, Office of the Spokesperson Washington, DC April 17, 2015 Secretary of State John Kerry will travel to Iqaluit, Canada, on April 24 to attend the biennial Arctic Council Ministerial. During the meeting, Secretary Kerry will begin a two-year term as Chairman of the Arctic Council, succeeding the Honorable Leona Aglukkaq, Canada’s Minister for the Arctic Council. Secretary Kerry will present the 2015-2017 U.S. Arctic Council chairmanship program, "One Arctic: Shared Opportunities, Challenges, and Responsibilities," to the seven other Arctic Member States and six Permanent Participants of the Council. U.S. chairmanship priorities include addressing the impacts of climate change; Arctic Ocean safety, security and stewardship; and improving economic and living conditions for people in the Arctic.
