The United States welcomes Guatemalan President Otto Perez Molina’s decision to renew the mandate of the International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala for two years. This is a major step forward in the fight against organized crime. CICIG is an important partner of the government and people of Guatemala. It helps in their efforts to promote the rule of law, accountability, and the integrity of the institutions of justice and public order. CICIG’s continuing role in Guatemala will advance the goals of Guatemala and the United States as articulated in the Plan of the Alliance for Prosperity in the Northern Triangle. The U.S. Government has contributed more than $25 million in support for CICIG since it began operations in January 2008. And we are committed to continuing to fund and support CICIG. Through this commission, Guatemala can send an unequivocal message that no one stands above the law. |
