On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I congratulate the people of Ghana as you celebrate 58 years of independence on March 6. The United States has stood by Ghana’s side ever since you peacefully earned independence and Kwame Nkrumah declared Ghana free forever. When the Organization of African Unity met in Ghana, the American embassy donated its typewriters. When Nkrumah arrived in Washington, President John F. Kennedy was on the tarmac waiting to shake his hand. And six years ago, President Obama traveled to Accra to declare that the 21st century will not just be shaped in Washington, but in African capitals like Accra, as well. To this day, Ghanaian and American citizens are united in our commitment to democracy, human rights, free enterprise, and peace and security. We have forged a strong partnership, reinforced by our joint effort to stop the spread of Ebola in West Africa. Ghana remains a critical partner and contributor to UN peacekeeping operations around the world. And we will continue to work closely with the Ghanaian people to strengthen your investment climate in order to expand trade and increase prosperity for all. On this joyous occasion, I send warm wishes to the people of Ghana. |
